Our Mission
For our prosperous future
Organisms have evolved throughout the long history of a changing world, resulting in the diverse life forms we see today. Humans, like other organisms, live in a fragile environment. We utilize biological resources in various ways; for food, for clothing, for medicine, for aesthetic reasons, and for pleasure. The mission of the Tsukuba Botanical Garden is to investigate and conserve plant diversity, and to help people understand the world of plants and the value of plants as the basis for our own existence.
Understanding Biodiversity
Over time, plants have diversified morphologically and chemically in response to variations in their environment. Moreover, plants have coevolved with other organisms to form symbiotic, parasitic and other relationships with other plants, withinsects, with higher animals and with fungi. Our studies are concerned with the various aspects of plant diversity reflected in morphology, chromosomes, molecular phylogeny and chemosystematics.
Conserving Biodiversity
The role of botanical gardens in the conservation of biodiversity has been increasingly emphasized in recent years. We are committed to programs in conservation using our expertise. Our research programs focus on inventories and research on threatened plants indigenous to Japan and on endemic species, which should receive our highest priority and be the principal mission of the national center of natural history.
Conveying Biodiversity
Our education activities are focused on the need to make the public aware of the importance of biodiversity to be concerned with its preservation.Through exhibits and seminars, we convey to our audience the meaning of plant diversity, its significance, its current status, and that it is rapidly disappearing.
